Flash range to Hog deer stag in the night pic is about 6 meters….quite good illumination that can be improved about 20% with the WTS HE-AR shutter & flash glass available as an option in their kits.

Digital cameras modified for trail camera usage.

I have 3 great condition 100% functional Sony S40 4.1mp digital cameras that have been modified for trail camera use by wiring-in a 3 wire front mounted servo cable which enables the camera to be hooked up to a homebrew trail camera controller board.

The Sony S40 is a good reliable digital camera and well-suited to trail camera homebrew application. It takes a nice clear picture, uses 2 AA batteries (Lithiums recommended), has a fast shutter response, date & time stamping function, takes up to a 2 gb memory card and has a good flash although not up to the Sony S600 performance…nothing is !

Accompanying Hog deer pics are taken with my original US-made Predator HB trail camera that has an S40 Sony aboard. This is still going strong and has taken many 1000’s of pics in the past 3 years. Price per camera is $110 plus around $10 postage…includes S40, complete 3 wire front-mounted servo connector, instructions for wiring connection to controller board, Sony Memory stick Pro Duo adaptor (no memory card) and a print-out of the optimum S40 camera settings for TC usage. Each camera will be pre-set prior to delivery for getting the best out of it under trail camera conditions.

These would be good units for anyone interesting in doing a homebrew build as Whitetail Supply in the US makes pre-drilled XLP kits for this camera and as the flash & shutter spacings are exactly the same as the Sony S600 the S40 can be swapped for a S600 without any alteration to the case. Putting together a WTS pre-drilled kit is easy to do and you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you’ve built it yourself….and I’ve done all the hard stuff hot-wiring the camera for you !
